Storm

Survived Hurricane Sandy.

I spent some time on Pinterest, while hunkering down in the house.  Came across a recipe for pumpkin muffins that used only two ingredients: a yellow cake mix and a can of Libby's pumpkin.  Tonight I made them and they are yummy.

Title goes here :)

Tuesday finds me at the Salisbury University library writing a paper for school. Discovered a couple weeks ago that the front desk can provide community members with a weeklong pass that gives you access to the internet from your laptop or any of their computers. Project #3 is a short paper covering the culture of an organization and some recommended improvements. I chose to write on Whirlpool. So far, I have learned that they are headquartered in Benton Harbor, Michigan and will be closing a plant in Fort Smith, Arkansas around the middle of next year.

Last night after dinner, I was on the phone with my credit card company Bank of America. They mailed me out a brand new card enclosed with a letter, stating that my account had been compromised. Apparently this is a safeguard when third party merchant's computers are hacked and they notify the credit card company. I appreciate the security, but it is putting a kink in my automatic billing process. Stopping by the bank today.

Might need to purchase a new bed. Looked at Ikea and Johnny Janosik's website to begin understanding the various options and prices available. While sweeping up the dust as we changed the filters in the vents, I found a Madeline L'Engle book "Many Waters" that had fallen under my bed. Excited to find this treasure paid $2.12 for at the used bookstore downtown.

Character according to Reagan

Reading my Organizational Leadership textbook this afternoon and enjoyed the little side box with a quote from President Ronald Reagan (originally written for the Center for the Study of American Business. 1998).

"The character that takes command in moments of critical choices has already been determined. It has been determined by a thousand other choices made earlier in seemingly unimportant moments. It has been determined by all those 'little' choices of years past--by all those times when the voice of conscience was at war with the voice of temptation--whispering a lie that 'it doesn't really matter.' It has been determined by all the day-to-day decisions made when life seemed easy and crises seemed far away, the decisions that piece by piece, bit by bit, developed habits of discipline or of laziness; habits of self-sacrifice or self-indulgence; habits of duty and honor and integrity--or dishonor and shame."

Spanish receipes

Stopped at the library while running errands today and picked up book titled Seasonal Spanish Food by Jose Pizarro. Inside there is a receipe for potato tortillas that I want to try and perfect my technique.

  • Potato Tortilla

  • Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Paprika Sauce

  • Cherry Sangria

  • Pan-fried Paprika Chicken with Mashed Potatoes

  • Seafood Paella

Need to find a large frying pan or paella pan 18 in in diameter and the spice saffron.

Ball games and the boy

Softball season is here once again, and my thighs are sore from catching yesterday. The Number Ninja's perform well and we have slaughtered others and been slaughtered. Nick, remains a fun part of life supporting the team from the stands. Ashley jokingly expected him to bring signs his first night out to the ball field. Well, he printed one out ninjas and all.

Keynes

Why I respect Obama...thank you for doing your part to get us out of the economic mess. Spending taxpayer dollars on your campaign bus, rather than working from the oval office...

Republican party met in Iowa for a straw poll last week and the field has narrowed to three candidates: Michelle Bachman (who RollingStones magazine mentioned spent $4000 in make-up artists in a few weeks), Perry from Texas and Mitt Romney. Others could join in The Fray. Reading the complimentary Wall Street Journal at our hotel over the weekend, I learned that the people who cast votes at the Iowa straw poll all had to pay $30 per ticket. ?!? So some organizations pay supporters to come out and vote. Weird way to determine candidates this far out from elections. Why do they have to pay?

In a similar vein do you think we should be spending our way out of this deficit or should we cut back on spending to less than what we earn in a year? Have you taken an Economics course? Keynesian follower?

Well, I should get back to writing this ethics paper ...900 more words to go on this hypothetical company that made faulty military armor, declared bankruptcy, failed to warn its employees it was leaving the country, and split to Argentina with funds stashed in Swiss banks. Yeah. Study break over.

Grounds for firing and upcoming movies

Two different topics with nothing in common other than they are both weighing on my mind today. In my years of reading the news and working, I have heard of various reasons to terminate an employee. I'll preface this with I am not fired, but one of my co-workers/friends was this week when I was not there.

The reason for my friend seeking other employment, she took two cookies without paying for them and was caught on the security cameras. Yes, that is wrong, but I find it sad to lose an employee over $2.18 retail. The cost to hire and train a person to take their place is far greater. If they were closing that night and had asked a manager, sometimes employees can take product home because it all gets donated anyway.

I've seen a friend get fired for putting extra meat on a sandwich, at the request of a former employee. Was caught, fixed it before it went over the counter, was reprimanded and terminated immediately. All this while living in a state which has not passed break laws for adults. Deal with it and move on.

So, happy thought Tink... upcoming movies that enter theaters on July 29th: Cowboys and Aliens with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, and Smurfs!! with NPH (Neil Patrick Harris) and Jonathan Winters (comic who was in Its a mad Mad MAD World).

Went shopping for cake decorating tools with Libby this afternoon. She's baking two wedding cakes the first weekend in August, and now owns a fondant roller & smoother, pearl dots, and white and blue ribbon.
