Turning in a paper on the violence and moral stances in Amores Perros, put me halfway through finals week. I just donned tights, leotard and slippers in preparation for the 10:45 ballet final in Maggs. Barring enrollment at DanceCenter this will be the last time in a dance studio. Ali, my partner, greatly helped choreograph the combination, she kept it simple but elegant.
Last night when I climbed the three flights of stairs in Holloway Hall to Pubill’s office, glad to stop writing and editing, my mind was jumping ahead to the Spanish club meeting in a half an hour. Throughout the semester as I met other Spanish majors, in Caruther’s hallways or at Fiesta Mex, I began to sense an unhappiness in how the current club was run.
Long story shorter, after a recent e-mail a meeting was called during finals to hold elections. Maria Cobb the current president had planned to hold them at the beginning of the fall semester, but Profesora Pubill after unearthing the club’s constitution forced it sooner. So four graduating seniors, the professor, two students staying in the fall, Maria and Nick Myers attended. Katie forced a vote for president, something I am not sure Maria saw coming. However both Maria and Nick gave speeches on what they would do for the club and why they wanted the position.
Nick won. VP is open and Maria did not want it. After two years it is hard to blame her. Joycell is the new secretary and I volunteered to be the treasurer. I pray we can reconcile with Maria.
Nick and Pubill plan to hold the meetings in Spanish, hold fundraisers so we have cash to support other causes, and not focus only on Cinco de Mayo- a Mexican holiday that latinoamericans don’t necessarily identify with. Since there are 22 Spanish speaking countries the club will try and represent more of them. It will be an interesting transitional time.
